Earrings
Vermeil is an alternative to the much more expensive 24kt Gold Foil, providing the bright gold color at a much more reasonable price. To be considered vermeil in the US, the gold must be at least 10 carat (42%) and have thickness equivalent to at least 2.5 micrometres of fine gold (a 12 carat [50%] plating would need to be 5 µm thick).
Vermeil can be produced by either fire-gilding or electrolysis. For safety sake, today, vermeil is safely produced by electrolysis.
