WINTER WONDERLAND IN VENICE
Enjoy some scenes of Venice in the snow. While it does not snow often in Venice, when it does, it's magical. Venice is only 90 kilometers from the Dolomites, the range of mountains which separate Italy from Austria. On a clear day in the winter in Venice you can see the snow on the mountains. A very beautiful sight, unfortunately it is impossible to get a good picture of this view. The best place to see this is from Fdte Nove where your view is not obstructed by the buildings.
This year has been extraordinary in Venice with snow on 3 occasions. The most recent was almost 14 inches of snow lasting for about 3 days. I find Venice a most magical place at any time, but covered with snow is too beautiful to describe. Locals find it difficult as you can imagine since they need to walk everywhere and the bridges get slippery.
It is normal for Venice to get a dusting of snow each year, but heavy snow is quite unusual and the local cities are not prepared to deal with shoveling, salting or traffic. The bridge between the mainland and Venice was blocked for hours with traffic accidents and the town just before you get to Venice, Mestre, was a disaster with the cars and traffic.
Our Favorite Kind of Snowman!
A light dusting of snow in the square in the early afternoon. Grey skies still hold lots of snow for the evening.
The tourist don't seem to mind that the weather is cold, they just bundle up and enjoy the singing and the great views.
