Centuries of Venetian glassmaking tradition meet an unusual sculptural technique in this substantial 30mm mouth-blown Murano Glass focal bead.
Created in rich earth tones, this authentic Venetian bead combines shades of brown, orange, maroon, black, white and clear Murano Glass. Its layered colors and hand-worked surface give the bead wonderful depth and make it particularly striking as the centerpiece of a necklace, bracelet or other one-of-a-kind jewelry design.
The bead begins with small mosaico, or millefiori, glass canes that are carefully fused together and worked around the blowpipe. These complex canes contain layers of different colors, drawing upon the same Venetian glassmaking tradition associated with historic Chevron beads.
Once the mouth-blown bead has cooled, the surface is worked and ground by hand to cut through portions of the glass and reveal the different colors hidden within the layered canes. This additional handwork produces the distinctive sculpted appearance and creates a bead that changes dramatically as it is viewed from different angles.
At the center, a window of clear Murano Glass accented with black lines provides another visual dimension and contrasts beautifully with the warm earth tones surrounding it.
The result is much more than a simple patterned bead. It combines glass cane making, mouth-blowing, fusing and cold-working techniques in a single piece of Venetian glass.
At approximately 30mm, this is a large focal bead with enough presence to become the centerpiece of a necklace or pendant design. It can also be incorporated into a bold bracelet or other statement jewelry.
The hole varies slightly because of the handmade process but measures approximately 2mm nominally.
Each bead is individually created and subsequently worked by hand. Variations in color placement, pattern, shape and grinding are therefore expected and are an important part of the character of authentic artisan-made Murano Glass. No two beads will be exactly alike.
