Handmade in Italy, this substantial 20x18mm Venetian glass bead begins with a base of opaque maroon-brown Murano Glass. Splashes of brilliant 24kt gold foil are combined with sparkling avventurina and free-flowing swirls of black glass to create an abstract pattern across the surface.
The entire design is then encased beneath a layer of crystal-clear Murano Glass. This clear outer layer gives the bead wonderful visual depth, allowing you to look through the glass to the colors, metallic foil and avventurina beneath. As the bead moves, the gold and coppery sparkle catch and reflect the light from different angles.
Avventurina is one of the distinctive materials associated with Venetian glassmaking. Tiny particles of copper suspended within the glass produce its characteristic warm metallic sparkle. Here, it works beautifully with the maroon-brown background and genuine gold foil to create a rich, sophisticated palette.
The addition of irregular black swirls keeps the design from feeling formal or predictable. Each bead develops its own abstract pattern as the molten glass is worked by hand, so no two beads will have exactly the same placement of black, gold or avventurina.
Measuring approximately 20mm x 18mm and 5mm thick, the softly rectangular shape offers a different silhouette from traditional round Murano beads. It is large enough to use as a focal bead while remaining versatile for necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other one-of-a-kind jewelry designs.
