The bead begins with an opaque Verde Nilo Murano Glass base, a distinctive soft pea-green shade. Traditional Fiorato flowers and decorative piping are then individually applied by the Venetian lampworker, creating the raised floral decoration for which these classic beads are known.
Fiorato, meaning “flowered” in Italian, is one of the traditional decorative techniques associated with Venetian lampwork beads. The flowers and piping are not painted onto the finished bead; they are created from molten glass and carefully applied while the bead is being worked at the flame.
What makes this particular Fiorato design especially unusual is the addition of genuine 24kt gold foil. The gold lies beneath portions of the floral decoration and remains partially exposed in areas of the finished bead. As the Verde Nilo glass interacts with the brilliant gold, subtle variations in color appear across the surface.
The combination of soft green, colorful flowers and glowing Venetian gold gives this bead an almost antique quality while retaining the lively character traditionally associated with Fiorato glass.
Measuring approximately 16mm round, it is an excellent size for necklaces and bracelets and substantial enough to become the focal point of a pair of earrings.
Because the flowers, piping and gold foil are applied individually by hand, each bead will vary. The position and shape of the flowers, decorative lines and exposed gold will never be precisely identical, making every bead a small individual work of Venetian glass artistry.
A Note About the Exterior Gold Foil
Some of the genuine 24kt gold foil is intentionally exposed on the exterior as part of this bead's design.
Exterior gold foil can gradually show wear through normal handling and contact with skin oils, lotions or other products. This is a natural characteristic of this traditional decorative treatment and is not considered a defect in the handmade bead.
